“Even though he was frightened when a man started yelling at him on the bus, my student with intellectual disabilities knew how to keep himself safe.” ~ Rob, A Special Education High School Teacher

Thanks to generous donations from people like you, we are helping people with disabilities protect themselves from assault. We hear many stories from special education teachers and advocates, such as this one from Rob:

Teachers have joy when their students learn how to take charge of their safety and success.

“I work in a classroom with young adults who have intellectual disabilities and who are often out on their own on public transit. A few months after our Fullpower workshop, one of my students excitedly told me about what could have been a dangerous situation.

‘Yesterday I was on my way home on the bus when a big man started yelling that I was a retard and to get off the bus. At first I was scared, but then I remembered from our workshop how to throw away his words instead of taking them inside. I got up quickly and went to the bus driver to get help. When he didn’t understand, I told him again. He told me to sit on the seat near him. At the next stop, the bus driver told the man to leave people alone or to get off the bus.’

Without his Fullpower training, my student would probably have frozen or even gotten off at the wrong stop, which could have put him in danger. At best, he would have felt miserable for the rest of the day. Instead, he felt proud of himself for knowing what to do.
