Here are some free resources that can enable kids to have more fun and fewer problems while they meet new people, go different places, spend more time on their own, and explore our beautiful world.
1. Kidpower Summer Safety Tips explains how to use boundaries and safety plans to prepare kids to stay safe when they are away from their adults at home, in summer programs, in the community, and on trips.
2. Our Keeping Our Kids Safe at Summer Camps and in Youth Sports – Child Abuse Prevention Video provides cheerful and clear guidance about:
- what questions to ask of places and people in charge of your kids
- how to prepare children and teens to speak up for their safety, and
- how to take action when there is a concern.
3. Travel Safety Tips – Stay Safe! Have Fun! Keep in Touch! serves as a checklist to review with a young person who is getting ready to make a trip away from home. Thinking about and discussing these issues ahead of time can bring greater peace of mind to parents as well as greater safety for travelers of any age.
4. Preparing Kids for More Independence answers the question, “How will I know when my child is ready to do something on their own?” This five step process can be adapted for use with young people of different ages, personalities, and abilities for a wide range of situations.
5. The “Uh Oh” Feeling: How To Teach Kids to Use Their Intuition has five steps you can use to teach kids to recognize and pay attention to their internal safety alarm, so that they can notice potential problems and leave or get help as soon as possible.
