Skills for Protecting Ourselves and Others
In our organization, we stand for SAFETY. No matter who you are, where you live, what you believe, or how you look – if you are a human being, then you are likely to need skills to prevent and solve problems with people.
We provide knowledge and skills that help prepare ALL people to protect themselves and others from bullying, harassment, and violence due to prejudice and discrimination. This includes how to stay safe from anti-Asian attacks, racism, antisemitism, islamophobia, attacks on LGBTQIA+ people, attacks on people with disabilities, appearance-based attacks, attacks because of age or beliefs, etc. etc. etc.
Skills We Teach
In our programs, we teach and practice how to avoid and stay safe from disrespectful, unsafe, or threatening behavior by:
-
Making safety plans about how to handle different kinds of problems with people everywhere you go, in-person and online
-
Being strategic about making wise choices in complicated, upsetting situations
-
Staying aware and acting assertively
-
Managing emotional triggers
-
Protecting emotional safety
-
Setting boundaries
-
Advocating for change
-
De-escalating conflict
-
Taking charge of mental health
-
Leaving in a powerful and respectful way
-
Persisting to get the right kind of help
-
Using self-defense techniques in an emergency to escape from a physical attack
What We Provide Schools & Other Groups
Especially in polarized times, schools and other groups struggle with creating positive environments that promote a culture of safety and respect for ALL in their community. To do this, they need to know how to develop and implement plans to address all forms of prejudice-based attacks.
We provide leaders with practical tools to help them:
-
Act consistently in ways that protect emotional and physical safety for ALL community members, no matter what beliefs they hold
-
Intervene respectfully and powerfully to address unsafe or disrespectful behavior of people of any age or position
-
Pay attention and address issues immediately, even when taking action is uncomfortable
-
Respond compassionately and proactively when people come to you for help
-
Recognize the serious risk of retaliation community members face if they speak up – and take action to make it safe
-
Listen when people express safety concerns – even if they are acting upset and being rude and you feel triggered – so that you can respond effectively and respectfully.
We also provide training for parents and other adult leaders in how to:
-
Advocate for the well being of young people and others in their care
-
Include age-appropriate, positive, success-based skills practice in their discussions about these difficult issues with youth of all abilities
-
Model, teach, and coach the use of ‘People Safety’ skills in daily life
